ANALYSIS OF PROCESS AND COOLING TOWER WATERAND DEPOSIT SAMPLES
METHOD: DNA hybridization using a library of 31 Genus-specific and Genus/spercie specific probes. Microbial DNA is directly isolated from the sample which gives a truer representation of the microbial population of the sample without the bias of slower growing microorganisms not being represented. In addition, injured cells, which may not be able to grow on subculture to microbiological media, will also be detected. Detection Limits: While we have been able to detect most microorganisms at less than 100 cfu/ml or gram levels; overall the detection limit would be better placed at the 500 cfu level. This is near the limits of potential problems in most systems. In addition, a calculated cfu value is also reported which is based on the average amount of 1.6 fentagrams/bacterial cell.
